The MIKM consists of two parts, each leading to a qualification:
The entry point is in the form of coursework at NQF level 8 after which the Post Graduate Diploma in Knowledge and Information Systems Management (KISM) is conferred. Successful completion of the first part with 65% or higher is required to proceed to a research thesis at NQF level 9 after which the MPhil degree in Information and Knowledge Management (IKM) is conferred.
In the past the MIKM offered only one qualification at NQF levels 8 and 9 consisting of coursework and a thesis. Students had to specifically request to be conferred a BPhil degree at NQF level 8. The changes described above follow from a revised qualifications structure in the process of being introduced countrywide by the Department of Education. The new structure requires that completion of every NQF level be recognised with its own formal certification.
